Just a Girl

Teen: But...you're just a girl...
- The Gift

Girls are very strange creatures. They're driven by their feelings, first and foremost. Rational thought is beyond them, and it's near impossible for them to make logical decisions. Especially when concerning love, they're always blinded by their emotions. Thus, their decision-making capabilities simply cannot be trusted.

Kendra: Is that all you're worried about? Your boyfriend?

Buffy: It's not all. But it's enough.

Kendra: It's as I feared. He clouds your judgment. We can't stop this ritual alone -
- What's My Line, Part 2

***

Xander: Way I see it you want to forget all about Ms. Calendar's murder so you can have your boyfriend back.
- Becoming, Part One

***

Willow: Buffy, I feel that when it comes to Angel, you can't see straight.
- Revelations

It's best that girls be protected and shielded from the world around them. They simply could not act in a reasonable, calm manner if they knew all about what is happening. They should only be told what they absolutely need to know, and no more. Any extra information may cause them to become hysterical and useless. Men have the responsibility of watching over girls and making sure that this doesn't happen.

Xander: Willow...she said to tell you...

Buffy: Tell me what?

Xander: ...kick his ass.
- Becoming, Part Two

***

Angel: If she knew I was here, I - It would distract her. It could get her hurt.
- Pangs

In addition to their emotional instability, girls are also physically weaker. They're inferior to men in hitting, throwing, running, and fighting. Again, they require protection because of their natural frailty.

Buffy: Are you getting the big picture here? I have no strength. No coordination. I throw knives like...like...

Giles: A girl?
- Helpless

***

Angel: Believe me, I won't let anything hurt you if I can help it.
- Earshot

***

Buffy: What is it, you think boys can take care of themselves and girls need help?

Riley: Yeah.
- The Initiative

***

Spike: They're strong, and I can't fight. If they get in, I don't know if I can protect you.
- Something Blue

***

Riley: Don't get me wrong, girls I grew up with could hold their own, but...I'm not even sure I could take you.
- A New Man

Finally, girls are never, ever threatening. Remember, these are delicate creatures.

Mr. Maclay: Is this a joke? I am not gonna be threatened by two little girls.
- Family

Ladies, don't ever forget your place. Be like Buffy.

Buffy: Kendra - my emotions give me power. They're total assets.
- What's My Line, Part 2

***

Buffy: "Soon". Soon what, Giles? I mean, you never held back on me until the big bad thing in the dark became my ex-honey. [...] This is no time to start being protective guy. I can't just hang around - and I can't prepare when I don't know what's coming.
- Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered

***

Buffy: It doesn't stop! Do you think I chose to be like this? Do you know how lonely it is? How dangerous? I would love to be upstairs watching TV or gossiping about boys or god, even studying. But I have to save the world. Again.
- Becoming, Part Two

***

Angel: That's everything, huh? No weapons, no friends. No hope. Take all that away and what's left?

Buffy: Me.
- Becoming, Part Two

***

Buffy: Are you getting the big picture here? I have no strength. No coordination. I throw knives like...like...

Giles: A girl?

Buffy: Like I'm not the Slayer.
- Helpless

***

Buffy: What is it, you think boys can take care of themselves and girls need help?

Riley: Yeah.

Buffy: That is so Teutonic.
- The Initiative

***

Spike: They're strong, and I can't fight. If they get in, I don't know if I can protect you.

Buffy: You think you have to protect me?
- Something Blue

***

Buffy: I walk. I talk. I shop, I sneeze, I'm gonna be a fireman when the floods roll back. There's trees in the desert since you moved out, and I don't sleep on a bed of bones.
- Restless

***

Teen: But...you're just a girl...

Buffy: That's what I keep saying.
- The Gift

Great job! I do not comprehend why people don't like the Buffster, she's amazing.

That's right, girls are weak and ruled by their emotions and...*reads further*...wait...what?

Points to Buffy for extreme bravery and an independent spirit. You make a lot of good points here about how men need to change the way they think of women.

My only real quarrel is with this notion that men wanting to protect women is somehow a bad notion. Not to say that women can't look after themselves, but even if my girlfriend was the most badass slayer of all time and I was weak little me, I would still want to do anything I could to help her look after herself. And of course, in the interest of non-double-standard-y fairness, if some woman wanted to protect me (though I can't imagine why anyone would) she would be more than welcome to do so. Just because a man wants to protect a woman he cares about, doesn't necessarily mean that he views her as incapable.

Other than that, fabulous post. It's not easy to make a point by emphasizing the counterarguments, but you did it exceedingly well. If I wore a hat, it would be off to you, but the stereotype that all men wear hats is exceedingly harmful so I work against it as often as I can.

You're defending a concept that has been used for millenia to infantilize women and justify sexism against them. Yes, it's a bad notion. Especially if your girlfriend is the Slayer. She would need support. Not protection.

Feminist snark makes a good dessert! Plus this is a nice culmination of some other stuff you've been talking about lately - nice to have all the quotes in one place.

And yaaaay, I love you Buffy! :P

Thanks! It actually was inspired by Angel's stalky "protection" in Pangs as I was also thinking about the "You're just a girl" like in The Gift. Things kinda clicked. :)

And yaaaay, I love you Buffy! :P

Hands off! She's mine! :)

You know, I got to the third sentence or so and thought, "Hmm. I think I detect sarcasm here. Maye even irony." But then I came to my senses. "Gabs would never lie to us," I thought. "She's always straightforward and direct. If she writes it, you know it's what she really thinks."

So don't worry. If you get all emotional when you read this reply, I'll be there to protect you. :-)

Eh, I'm just on the rag. You know that makes us girls go a little crazy.

I'm always appreciative of any big strong menfolk who are willing to protect helpless, irrational, hysterical little me. Yep.

I just followed a link reccing a story about how Buffy really does think keeping her boyfriend is more important than Jenny's life. It made me sad.

I think I love you.

ETA: This is rather tangerial, but I think you'd enjoy The Valet of Anize. The protagonist of the story is Valet, who is un-gendered. (Non-gendered? These concepts are tricky.) It is a work in progress, and the author welcomes con-crit. It is a fascinating concept, and shows very clearly how entrenched our need to gender people is. Also - sci-fi! :)

You know what sucks even more? When women themselves view women as weak and incapable. I know a lot of women who think like that, and it annoys me.

Buffy is my hero, too. But when it's dark and I'm all alone, I'm wondering where the hell Xander is. heh

Yeah. It's a prevalent view, and it can be difficult not to internalize it.

But when it's dark and I'm all alone, I'm wondering where the hell Xander is. heh
