OTW Fannews: Collaborative playgrounds

  • It's not only communication between entertainment creators and fans that's becoming common, but also a creative dialogue. Anna Pinkert at Spinoff Online wrote about the benefits of embracing slash and other fan creations. "At a recent event, a reporter showed The Avengers star Mark Ruffalo a series of drawings of his character snuggling with Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. He began giggling, and then even made up captions for one of the cartoons, “Would you like a gummy worm?” Better yet, he told the reporter, “I endorse [this art] 100 percent. You know what it is? It’s open-source creativity.” She suggests that "[h]omoerotic fan art might be a new signal that you’ve arrived in Hollywood. People know your face (and your abs) well enough to do 30 sketches of you embracing another star." At least some actors are ready to invite fans to play.

(Note – No Star Trek-related refs this week, I’m seeing it this evening and I don’t want to spoil myself!)

Regarding the finale of The Office, Los Angeles Times’s Robert Lloyd wrote Endings are hard, especially in a series whose very subject is that things go on much the same year after year. […] But we also crave official, canonical assurance that everything will be OK for the characters after we part. We can't just leave it to the fan fiction.

Also in the Los Angeles Times, Meredith Blake reported that Tony Goldwyn and Amy Schumer recently teamed up for a dramatic performance of some "Scandal" fan fiction they found on the internet, for “Watch What Happens Live.”

In “Embracing the culture of fanfiction” for DNA India, Neharika Nair wrote Anybody who has ever read or watched something has noticed that there are always a few questions left unanswered, or a few bits that they would change. And that is why fanfiction exists.

MIT’s The Tech’s Deena Wang interviewed Flourish Klink, who said I think there’s a lot of things that have changed since fandom moved off of LiveJournal and on to Tumblr. For about 10 years, fandom was really centered about LiveJournal. Moving to Tumblr has made a lot of changes in terms of how you get involved in fandoms, and how you can build communities or not. I think that fandom has become a lot more decentralized and there’s less of an emphasis on fanfiction now than there ever has been, and more of an emphasis on GIFs, on a lot more visual stuff. GIFs get a lot more traction because you’ve got a way to propagate images a lot more easily.

Finally, in a review of Christie Golden’s StarCraft II: Flashpoint for Forbes (FORBES??), Jen Bosier wrote The world of expanded universes is that of a mixed bag — so much of its legacy is owed to internet boards and forums, spawning from the dark art that is fan fiction. As an active writer and follower of fanfic, I would never naysay the art (and it is an art in its own right), but I’m not necessarily a fan of published fanfic. These offerings do firmly belong on the internet, and it’s always a disappointment to me when an game’s official EU is relegated to glammed up fanfic.

CORDY: Poor guy?
ANGEL: Well, he's got issues.
DOYLE: Angel, man, you've got to snap out of this!
CORDY: Right now. It's time for you to get all vampy - grr! - Kate needs you.

Strategic Planning Update #9

Statement of Purpose

The Strategic Planning Committee is continuing to work on helping the OTW develop a strategic plan for the next 3 - 5 years. As a quick refresher, the first stage of this plan is to survey internal stakeholders. We are in the process of interviewing all committees in turn and creating a report on each committee. The reports only include information that is gathered from the committees themselves, and all the conclusions and recommendations come from aggregating the data of those surveyed. CORDELIA: This is what happens when you're compassionate towards sick people. They take advantage of you.

OTW Fannews: Separate by intention?

  • Given media representations apparently a lot of people continue to think that female fandom projects are rare, although this may have to do with how gender segregated fandom projects often are. In a feature on the "Hello Sweetie" podcast, its founder discusses why it came into being. "She and others were listening...to 'Geek Show Podcast,' the popular online show started by X96’s 'Radio From Hell' host Kerry Jackson, local movie critics Jeff Vice and Jimmy Martin, and Tribune TV critic Scott D. Pierce. "'They never have any female panelists, rarely had female guests, and a lot of people were complaining about that,'"...On one episode of 'Geek Show Podcast,' one of the hosts said, 'If you [women] want to have a podcast, you should start one.'"

SPIKE: And I should do what in my spare time? Sit at home knitting cunning sweater sets?

BUFFY: Would it keep you out of my way?

RILEY: She's right. You shouldn't be out here when she's patrolling.

(Buffy turns to Riley in exasperation as if she's going to say something, but she doesn't.) SPIKE: Oh! I saw that. Looks like neither boy's entirely welcome. You should take him home, Slayer. Make him stay there. I've got knitting needles he can borrow.

BUFFY: Spike ... I just saw you taste your own nose blood, you know what? I'm too grossed out to hear anything you have to say. Go home.

(She stalks off. Riley gives Spike a dirty look, then follows. Spike looks injured.)

SPIKE: (yelling after them) It's blood! It's what I do!

The ref of the week comes from TIME, which included Archive of Our Own among the “50 Best Websites 2013”. Lev Grossman wrote Fan fiction is one of the great unsung popular literary movements of the past 50 years, but finding what you’re looking for online can involve sorting through mountains of inadequately tagged and frequently dodgy text. Archive of Our Own makes it easy: it’s the most carefully curated, sanely organized, easily browsable and searchable nonprofit collection of fan fiction on the Web, and it serves all fandoms equally, from The A-Team to Zachary Quinto and beyond. Observed Daily Dot’s Gavia Baker-Whitelaw, Fifty Shades of Grey may be the mainstream face of fanfiction, but it hasn’t done much to dispel the image of fanfic as being “mommy porn”, or just poorly-written in general. Which isn’t to say that lots of fanfiction isn’t erotica -- just that you could easily do a lot better than the strangely banal antics of Anastasia Steele and her amoral sugar-daddy. And that’s where Archive of our Own comes in. (Thanks go to tehomet for first giving me the initial heads-up!)

Dr. Brooke Magnanti, writing on women and erotica for The Telegraph: Who writes the slashfic (slash fiction) and fanfic (fan fiction) online that takes sexually fantasising about well-known television and film characters to a whole new level? Women do. Early studies even suggested as many as 90 per cent of fanfic writers were female.

In the Orlando Sentinel, Patrick C. Fleming, who teaches composition at Rollins College, observed that today’s Frosh haven't gone to book-release parties, or written fan fiction, or had Wizard-themed birthday parties. They are quite ready to abandon their attachment to Rowling's books, unwilling to follow that attachment into new arenas.

True Blood, Lawrence Leung, Iron Man 3, Kirk/Spock, BuffyCollapse )

On The Atlantic Wire, Richard Lawson wrote TNT has just ordered to series a Bay-produced action drama show called The Last Ship. It's about the Internet collectively deciding to no longer write slash fiction. No, no, of course not. Would that it were. Well, hrumph.

On Huffington Post, Faith Erin Hicks wrote I was a pretty repressed geek during my younger years. I probably would have been a full blown Star Trek: The Next Generation obsessed, X-Files fanfic writing, comic consuming geek if I'd actually felt like that was something appropriate to be, but I was kind of snobby as a teenager, viewing myself as someone who read Serious Books and had Serious Thoughts, when I secretly just wanted to moon over Data on TNG.

Harry Potter, audio erotica, Glee, Marvel, Calgary politics, Bronies, Community, Julian SandsCollapse )

Author Ridley Pearson told St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Jane Henderson I post chapters and plot outlines on kingdomkeepersinsider.com and they vote on things and send fan fiction. I might ask, “In this scene do you want it to be this Kingdom Keeper or that one?”

Gothamist’s Jen Chung wrote Last year, former City Council member Melinda Katz announced that she was marrying Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. She also added that he was the sperm donor for her two sons. While some felt it was like "nyc fan fiction," Sliwa's second ex-wife thought otherwise and is now suing Sliwa and Katz for $1.4 million, claiming that the couple scammed her out of $400,000.

Finally, writing in Salon, Aja Romano presented a run-down of Orson Scott Card’s views on fanfic (and other topics – oh, OSC, why are you so difficult?) and in honor of Card’s recent asserting that “Every piece of fan fiction is an ad for my book. What kind of idiot would I be to want that to disappear?”, invited readers to Enjoy the gay, gay [Ender’s Game] slash fanfiction—or write some of your own.

852 Prospect - AO3 Supports our Sentinel*

The OTW is delighted to welcome 852 Prospect -- the Sentinel Adult Fiction Archive -- to its new home within the Archive of Our Own. The Archivists of 852 Prospect (most recently alicettlg) have worked hard in conjunction with ADT and Open Doors to make this move a reality.

There's some special history associated with this move. 852 Prospect was the first automated fiction archive on the web. Back in 1997, astolat wrote the first version of the Automated Archive software for 852 Prospect, which made it possible for authors to post their stories simultaneously to a mailing list and to an archive, and which also made it possible for archivists to maintain fic archives without hand-coding every post. The automated archive software is now old and creaky and no longer maintained; we're delighted to be able to offer 852 Prospect a new home as an integrated collection within the AO3.

OTW Fannews: Cultural Triggers

  • While in some places fanfic writers are getting arrested, in others the concern is instead about how fans could be ruining pop culture. "Mr. Rushfield laments that fan culture is set in its ways and does not want to be challenged. I think this is an oversimplification...Yes of course, some fans will never be happy. Some fans say and do things I find shocking and disrespectful, but I think that this is a very small minority...To think that this subset of fans is the driving force behind any artistic decisions, is not giving enough credit to writers and producers in entertainment."

Time travel

Hi!:)
I'm looking for a fic where girl suddenly shows up ( i thing in Magic Box) from the future. She hates Buffy but loves Spike. Later it turns out she is her daughter, and that she hates Buffy because she left her when she was baby (thinking she is evil) and because Spike died protecting her.

OTW Fannews: The places fanfiction goes

  • NYU's student newspaper decided to feature fanfiction with a particularly local angle -- fanfiction set on its campus. "Remember when you were waiting for your acceptance letter? Whether NYU was your dream school or just your safety, you’d catch yourself longing for the city, dreaming of the day when you’d leave your home for the magic of New York...You weren’t the only one dreaming. In fact, some would-be students have dedicated hundreds of pages to their NYU-centric fantasies. So focused are these writers’ efforts that NYU Fanfiction has swelled into its own thriving—if slightly inaccurate—genre."

Doyle fix fic

I'm searching for a fic that I can't seem to remember the title of. What I remember is Cordy and Angel are acting all lovey dovey when Lorne rushes is in and does a spell that snaps them out of it. They were under a spell to make them seem like they were in love so that hopefully Angel would lose his soul. Then Doyle gets dropped in Buffy's living room. He became a higher power after his death but because he was interfereing with Angel's life they kicked him out. I remember Buffy driving Doyle to LA, but I don't remember what happens next. It's a B/A fic, obviously, with a little C/D on the side. Anyone know what fic I'm talking about?

Wednesday, May 8

ANGEL: Giles said she left Sunnydale about a week ago. Described her mental state as borderline psychotic.
CORDELIA: That explains her outfit.
WESLEY: This isn't right.
CORDELIA: When a whacked out Slayer tries to kill your boss, it's very wrong.
WESLEY: I meant Giles. Why didn't he give me the heads-up? I was Faith's Watcher! When she came out of her coma Giles should've contacted me immediately.

May Week Two

Hello again! This week in What Might Have Been, we're going back in time to the heady days of 2001-2002, when any and every spoiler you could imagine was roaming wild around the internets, wreaking havoc on a fannish population who had no downloads or YouTube clips to check the facts from con panels, but still a voracious appetite for juicy hints about what might have been to come. These rumoured (but ultimately false) spoilers for Season 6 inspired both fic and staunch discussion, so in the spirit of Buffy's resurrection (and, gang, was anyone quite sure how that was going to come off?) they're back with a vengeance!

1. Spike throws Xander a bachelor party.
2. Willow blackmails Spike about his malfunctioning chip.
3. A spell makes the Scoobies lose their memory of Dawn.
4. Tara gets darker.
5. Buffy will be able to teleport in S6.

(All right, so I'm not sure anyone believed the last one. But some of the twists that developed from what was presumably the hint that Buffy would come back altered by her experience were pretty hilarious.)

Fic: Meanwhile

Angel/Angelus Split

I'm looking for a particular Buffy/Angel parring fic. Angel and Angelus are split into separate bodies. Angelus ends up in the human body and Angel in the demon body. This would be an older fic from when the show was still on. I had copied it into a word doc, but it got lost in the move to a new computer, so I really appreciate any help you all can give.

Important information

For anyone and everyone struggling to break into print (digital print or otherwise), this is important reading. I think I'd be fooled....
