Spike Speak in S2 (w/ Bonus S3!)

will57
Well, in the past week or so, I've found some spare time here and there to go through the Spike scenes in S2 and S3 and, once again, keep track of the nickname-usage. That way, I'm all caught up and I just need to keep track as I'm reviewing.

In case you missed it, I made a post about S4 earlier with the hard data from my notes. This is just the same style. I noted that he oftentimes used slight variations on the same nickname ("my sweet" instead of just "sweet"). I counted them as the same.

Also, as before, I did keep track of who he was speaking to when he used each nickname. However, I haven't yet organized that data (And probably won't until I have all seasons complete).

So here goes. Hope you'll find some use/amusement out of it. :)

Season Two

Drusilla:

Dru - 14
(My) pet - 9
Baby - 6
Luv - 4
(My) sweet - 4
Darling - 3
Drusilla - 3
Ducks - 2
Kitten
My black goddess
Ripe, wicked plum
Poodle
Sweetheart

He calls Drusilla "Dru" 28% of the time, and he uses her full name only 6% (So he uses some variation on her name 34% of the time). Also notable is that he calls her "pet" 18% of the time.

Buffy:

Slayer - 12
Girl - 2
Bitch - 2
Pet - 2
Luv
Rebecca of Sunnyhell farm
Baby
Cutie

This should not be a surprise. He calls her "Slayer" 57% of the time. However, as stormwreath predicted, he never calls her this to her face. Actually, surprisingly, he doesn't use many nicknames while talking to her (Cause he really doesn't talk to her much this season). When actually speaking to her, he uses only three nicknames: "luv" (once), "pet" (twice), and "cutie" (once).

Angel/us:

Angel - 14
Angelus - 3
Mate - 2
Pal
Ninny

At this point in the series, "Angel" and "Angelus" are used interchangeably, so I didn't distinguish between the characters (Well, I did while keeping track, but not while compiling the data). Spike referred to Angel/Angelus as "Angel" 66% of the time. That jumps up to 81% if you throw "Angelus" and "Angel" together. So Spike typically refers to Angel by name this season.

Willy:

Willy - 2
Friend

The Judge:

The Judge
Big Blue
Mate

The Anointed One:

That anointed guy
The annoying one

Dalton:

Man
Dalton

Lucius:

Lucius - 2

Patrice:

Patrice

Random Vamp:

Nancy-boy

So for S2, Spike refers to people by some form of their name 39% of the time. Slightly more often than in S4 (31%) but not by a significant amount.

Also, for S2, there's a much smaller amount of data since Spike was not a regular. So keep that in mind when comparing the two seasons.

Now, onto...

Season Three

Drusilla:

Dru - 4
Drusilla
Baby
Bitch

Willow:

The little girl
Willow
The little witch

Buffy:

Buffy

Joyce:

Joyce

Angel:

Peaches
Great poof

Lenny:

Lenny
Pissant

The numbers for this season are way too small to bother with percentages. Spike was in one episode.

When I'm finished getting the data on all the seasons, then I'll smush them all together to get the overall numbers. For now, I'm just looking at each season individually.

Anyway...yeah... /geek

'Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm' is a children's book written in 1903. According to Wikipedia's plot summary: "Rebecca Rowena Randall goes to live with her two stern aunts in the village of Riverboro in Maine. Her joy for life ends up inspiring them. She faces many trials in her young life, but comes through them with more wisdom and understanding."

Heh. You and deird1 commented at almost the exact same time. :)

Also, go team me!

Indeed. Now let's see if you continue to be right through the later seasons.
