1. Joyce's surgery turns out well in this episode, leading us to think that she'll be okay. However, a few episodes down the line, she dies due to a complication involving the surgery. Good play on Joss' part or cheap trick?

Good play. It works well for the season.

This thought led me off on a tangent... Darla has syphilis. As a Vampire this doesn't hurt her but when she turns human again it starts killing her. Has she passed it on to Angel (and through him Dru and Spike and Harmony)? Or because they're all Vampires when they have sex does the disease not pass from one to the other? When Angel becomes human in IWRY does the syphilis become active? Could he give it to Buffy? Or can a Vamp give it to a human without being affected themselves (can Buffy, Faith, Willow could all be infected from just bites?). I'm guessing not... hmmm.
