Okay, let me set explain the score here. I started reading the Harry Potter series when there were only three books out. I joined the nascent fandom that existed for it at that time, and I stayed involved until some time after Goblet of Fire was released. During that huge gap between Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix, I'd dropped out of fandom - as happens - and got distracted by other stuff. I still read every book as it came out, but I'd only read Books 5-7 once as opposed to the multiple upon multiple times I read Books 1-4.
I also haven't seen any of the movies past Prisoner of Azkaban. Maybe I saw Goblet of Fire. I don't remember. I vastly preferred the books, and, while I don't actively dislike the movies, I'm largely indifferent to them.
So I've decided to give the books a reread cause, hey, it's been a while. I just finished up Book 5 and am starting on Book 6. Now, my disjointed and random collection of thoughts so far
1. I'd forgotten how much I love Hermione and Lupin. They were my two favorite characters the first time I read the books. They're still my favorite characters. Though I was one of those people who was mispronouncing Hermione's name up until the fourth book. Heh.
2. It's been nice to read Books 5-7 at a more leisurely pace. As is probably common of HP fans, I tended to read the newly released books as soon as they came out. In one...long...sitting. Good times, but it's not so good as far as actually absorbing and remembering what's happening. As it is, prior to my reread, I could probably detail some major events of Book 5, but I couldn't begin to tell you specifically what happened in Books 6 and 7. I had a general, fuzzy recollection of the main gist of everything, but nothing more substantial than that.
3. Also, I found this awesome post (with follow-up) in the midst of my reread. It makes me happy. I ♥ Hermione.
4. Wowie, I've heard it said but I really couldn't recall, but yeah, JK could have used some editing on Book 5. I'm assuming Books 6 and 7 will be much the same. Lovely story but the pacing dragged and some stuff should have been left out. Book 4, despite its size, held up well, though.
5. Haha! I love Ron being the thing Harry would miss most in Book 4. His "Wheezy"! Oh, bless.
6. I actually rather like Krum and Hermione at this point. I recall shipping Ron/Hermione the first time through, and I still do, but Ron's not working for me as well this time around. I like what we see of Krum's kinda glowery-yet-sensitive personality and the fact that he notices Hermione cause she's studying in the library all the time. He digs nerd! Damned if I can recall what happens to him, though. I know that Hermione/Ron end up together, and that's cool, but I don't remember what happens to Krum (or if we're even told what happens to him).
7. JK writes adolescent boys well. Harry's properly angsty and moody. Plus, you know, traumatized and whatnot.
Now! Here's where I ask for help cause I have no clue where to look for fanfic. Lemme just list off what I'm interested in and I'll see what you throw at me. No worries about spoilers. I've read the whole series. I just may not remember everything, so stuff set within the first 5 books would be easiest for me to dive into.
Characters: McGonagall, Grubbly-Plank, Lupin, Cho, Dobby
Pairings: Hermione/Krum, Hermione/Ron, Harry/Ron, Harry/Ron/Hermione, Luna/Ginny
Any recs?

I'll probably be back with more recs as I think of them. :)
ETA: Oh wait, duh, no that won't work since she has to friend you back for you to read her locked posts. Yeah, I think you need an account.

I thought Book 5 was lovely, but definitely not my fav. But then, Book 3 still hits my kinks cause, you know, lotsa Hermione being awesome and Lupin being Lupin. :)
Hermione irks me in a lot of the ways Willow irks me, so it makes me smile that you love them both so much.
Bonus rec: HP Beholder is a rare parring fic/art challenge that is kind of awesome.
While I am by no means well-versed in the fandom, I did a mini-recs post a couple weeks ago with some of my early faves and asked for people to nominate their favorites in the comments. There seem to have been some good ones suggested although I've had far less time to check them out that I would have hoped.
If you read nothing else on that list, you should check out the Matching-Muff Matrimony. It is perfectly written, laugh-out-loud funny throughout, and just the right length for a long afternoon and I imagine it will hit at least some of the same kinks as Ginny/Luna.
I too absolutely adore McGonagall, but I still haven't found any really great fic for her. If you manage to suss some out, do share, will you?
It's just been so long since I was in HP fandom and it went splode-y after I left. It's a bit hard to find a toe-hold, especially as I appear to have some odd pairing/character interests. I'll check out what you've found. :)
Also, I was just in Edinburgh--the cafe where Jo wrote most Philosopher's Stone has a small homage to the books in graffiti in the bathroom (go take a look if you want) but I feel the need to also post this:
Hee XD
I totally did that too!!! My parents were all, "We told you."
Oh wait, there's Coffee and Chocolate—it hasn't been updated in a while, but I really love their recs. There's bound to be stuff there you like!

ummm, recs....

rofl! Yep. That's why PoA remains my fav. As I recall, he never quite gets as much focus as he does there. :)
I remember you saying that you saw GOF and weren't happy with it because Hermione cried too much, especially after how awesome she was in POA. And all of the boys had ugly hair styles in that one.
I kinda think GOF was the worst of the adaptations, too much important stuff they had to cut out. POA did better with it but it still wasn't great. HBP was the best of the adaptations since COS, and the DH adaptations are really good as well.
Not into HP fandom at all, though, so I have no recs to give.
HAHA I AM CLASSIC!
I thought The Sorceror's Stone was actually the worst just cause they tried to go scene-by-scene from the book, and that just doesn't work when you're adapting a book to a movie. CoS kept that format, as I recall, but PoA switched things up and actually, you know, adapted the story to fit a movie format.
I'll probably watch the rest of the movies at some point. Whenever I'm done rereading the books. And am bored. And have some spare hours of time.
5. YES! THEIR BROMANCE! <3
7. Worrrd. I know a lot of people dislike Harry's moodiness, but... it's absolutely realistic.
I have quite a few recs on my HP Delicious tag. :) Also,
I love that you love this. :D It's such an adorable nickname, isn't it? Dawwww. IMO, Ron is still the thing Harry would miss most (and does... *spoiler*) in Book 7. His Wheezy. *repeats a gazillion times for the cuteness factor*.
Again, much agreement.
Oh, and Krum/Hermione gets a nice resolution in Book 7. That's all I'm a'sayin'.
3. ...after reading this, my opinions on Hermione may begin to change. :P
4. Word.
6. I totes ship Hermione/Krum
7. Word. ...again.
I don't know that I've ever had a leisurely read of 6 and 7; even though I've read them multiple times I still get really hooked. While book 5 could have used some editing, I feel that 6 and 7 are well-paced and fill out their length as well as or better than book 4.
And I'm trying to think of a way to say "Most of the fanfics I read are Porn Without Plot; I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for" without embarassing myself, but it's just not coming to me...

rofl! Heh, my "zomg high school kids having sex!" squick is in full force while browsing through HP fanfic. I'm gravitating towards teacherfic cause of that...
I liked the books -- I didn't see many of the movies, having basically the same attitude toward them as you do -- but to this day, I don't think I could provide more than the most basic synopsis of what happened. Ironically, some series I didn't much enjoy, like Twilight, I can summarize in far more detail.
And then there's the Buffyverse, where I can, in many cases, reproduce entire scenes of dialogue. I realized the other day that I can list every Season Six episode title in order, from memory. And I haven't watched it *that* many times! (Honest.) Certain fandoms just seem bound into our DNA.
