You know, I'm feeling genuinely and properly squeeful about New Who. I've watched the season opener twice now, and it still leaves me all tingly. I haven't had that for a while. It's nice. I'd soured on New Who with RTD's rein (yeah, bitter Classic Who fan, that's me), but Moffatt's storytelling style works much better for me.
So I'm overflowing with enthusiasm for this show, but I don't want to wander to areas of Who fandom because I don't want to delve into whatever fandom arguments are probably going on. I just want to enjoy it. Also, I'm not much into speculation, so I don't want to get caught up in fan theories and stuff.
Maybe I should just give the fandom a pass and enjoy the show on my own?
Or I can do a post on my LJ and have other squeeful folks join me!
Spoilers for the S6 opener, plus lots of River Song and Amy and Rory and Eleven love!
Guys! Guys! Did you see all that! It was *waves hands* ZOMG!!!
I loved River telling Rory about her relationship with the Doctor. I think it's interesting to look at the shift in power dynamics as the two continue on. When they first meet (from the Doctor's perspective), River clearly has the power (well, as much power as any human can have with a Time Lord). She has the leg up of more knowledge and experience of his life. As they keep meeting, that shifts as the Doctor gains more and more info on River and she knows less and less about him. I like how she brings up that she was an "impressionable young girl", because that's a thought that's occurred to me when considering River and the Doctor. I think it's good that the show acknowledges how very troubling the power dynamic can be, not just between River and the Doctor but between Amy and the Doctor (as Rory's comment acknowledges).
Also, I really don't want the library episodes to be River's final ending. She deserves much more than an eternity of domestic motherhood bliss. My hope is that the spaceman thing is somehow connected to that (cause, you know, spacesuits). Okay, long-shot, I know. I'm just gonna be grumbly if that's how River ultimately "dies".
But squee! For the episode!
I love the Doctor getting sulky that nobody was admiring his cleverness! Such a petulant child response. "Hey guys! Look at me!"
And I like that they've kinda flipped the whole group dynamic where it's the Doctor who's in the dark and the companions have the leg up on him. This is so interesting, and I can't wait to see what they do with it.
River Song's my wife, guys. She's the shiznit. There is nothing I don't adore about her. Confident, intelligent, competent, witty, AWESOME.
This may be random, but I like Amy's reaction to the Doctor's death in the restaurant (before the younger Doctor comes out). She kinda shuts down and snaps at the others. I love Amy's character so so much, and I love those moments where she's kinda losing it. *iz weird*
Also, I like that she kept Pond instead of going with Rory's last name. No real reason. I just dig seeing that in TV shows.
I liked the "Americans with guns" thing. I liked Amy shooting the girl/spaceman at the end. I liked the creepy forgettable aliens. I liked everything. Yeah, everything. Not a bit of it I didn't like. I like the meta of it - the structure, the plot, the pacing - and I like the it of it - the characters and the AWESOME. I want the next part. Now, please!

Well, it's still heads and away different from Classic Who, but that's gonna happen regardless. New era. New standards of media. Different format. The classic episodes were made up of four or more 30 minute serials. That allows for different types of narratives than a forty five minute episode does (pacing is always gonna be faster in the new Who).
BUT! But! There is something, whether it's with Moffatt's writing or with Smith's Doctor, that feels more like the old-style Who for me. I adore it, whatever it is.
Heh. "I'm not Mr. Pond. That's not how it works." "Yeah, it is." :)
Yes! ♥
