Doctor Who Squee

will57
You know, I'm feeling genuinely and properly squeeful about New Who. I've watched the season opener twice now, and it still leaves me all tingly. I haven't had that for a while. It's nice. I'd soured on New Who with RTD's rein (yeah, bitter Classic Who fan, that's me), but Moffatt's storytelling style works much better for me.

So I'm overflowing with enthusiasm for this show, but I don't want to wander to areas of Who fandom because I don't want to delve into whatever fandom arguments are probably going on. I just want to enjoy it. Also, I'm not much into speculation, so I don't want to get caught up in fan theories and stuff.

Maybe I should just give the fandom a pass and enjoy the show on my own?

Or I can do a post on my LJ and have other squeeful folks join me!

Spoilers for the S6 opener, plus lots of River Song and Amy and Rory and Eleven love!

Guys! Guys! Did you see all that! It was *waves hands* ZOMG!!!

I loved River telling Rory about her relationship with the Doctor. I think it's interesting to look at the shift in power dynamics as the two continue on. When they first meet (from the Doctor's perspective), River clearly has the power (well, as much power as any human can have with a Time Lord). She has the leg up of more knowledge and experience of his life. As they keep meeting, that shifts as the Doctor gains more and more info on River and she knows less and less about him. I like how she brings up that she was an "impressionable young girl", because that's a thought that's occurred to me when considering River and the Doctor. I think it's good that the show acknowledges how very troubling the power dynamic can be, not just between River and the Doctor but between Amy and the Doctor (as Rory's comment acknowledges).

Also, I really don't want the library episodes to be River's final ending. She deserves much more than an eternity of domestic motherhood bliss. My hope is that the spaceman thing is somehow connected to that (cause, you know, spacesuits). Okay, long-shot, I know. I'm just gonna be grumbly if that's how River ultimately "dies".

But squee! For the episode!

I love the Doctor getting sulky that nobody was admiring his cleverness! Such a petulant child response. "Hey guys! Look at me!"

And I like that they've kinda flipped the whole group dynamic where it's the Doctor who's in the dark and the companions have the leg up on him. This is so interesting, and I can't wait to see what they do with it.

River Song's my wife, guys. She's the shiznit. There is nothing I don't adore about her. Confident, intelligent, competent, witty, AWESOME.

This may be random, but I like Amy's reaction to the Doctor's death in the restaurant (before the younger Doctor comes out). She kinda shuts down and snaps at the others. I love Amy's character so so much, and I love those moments where she's kinda losing it. *iz weird*

Also, I like that she kept Pond instead of going with Rory's last name. No real reason. I just dig seeing that in TV shows.

I liked the "Americans with guns" thing. I liked Amy shooting the girl/spaceman at the end. I liked the creepy forgettable aliens. I liked everything. Yeah, everything. Not a bit of it I didn't like. I like the meta of it - the structure, the plot, the pacing - and I like the it of it - the characters and the AWESOME. I want the next part. Now, please!

Yes, true! But even when River is at her most powerful (she has all the knowledge of their history, knowledge is power), she's also powerless because the Doctor doesn't care about her. It's wonderful how they're exploring the power of shared experience and knowledge. She's drawn to the Doctor, totally in love with him when she first meets him, and he doesn't know her. She's both powerful and powerless just as he's both powerful and powerless.

It's brilliant. ♥

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of it, either. In some ways, it feels like another prison holding River and keeping her contained. I guess both River and the Doctor spend a lot time living in boxes.

Speculation: I suppose just because we saw Ten put River in there doesn't mean that she has to stay in there forever. Eleven could somehow release her.

And yes to all the rest! Team Tardis FTW. And my love for River Song is so so great. ♥

Exactly. And I think the Doctor has the leg up in any instance because he is already so old, himself, he's never at the "impressionable young girl" stage that River had been at when she for realzies first met him.

Very eloquent. :)

Yes. All of this. I'm confused, and I love it.

Can I say a brief word for the security guard we see early on at River's jail? The one that sets off the alarms and says, "It's happening again. She's packing!"

Love this running funny about her imprisonment vs ability to escape anything. Though it does make me wonder why she consents to be jailed at all. I have one huge unfounded theory which would make me very happy, but I'm hugging it to myself till after next ep.

My mom thinks that River's jail stint is completely consensual and she can go free whenever she wants. She stays out of guilt most of the time, though. I'm not so sure on that, because there do seem to be guards that she has to put some effort into escaping. But I can't wait to see what happens with it.

It makes me think of Faith. No jail can contain River.

Haha, I loved that line, too. And like Emmie, it makes me think of Faith, how the only thing truly keeping her there is her own guilt and feeling that she deserves it.

"Oh, this is the oval office. I was looking for the oblong room."

I could not stop laughing at that one! Andy thought I was going to fall out of my seat!

Loved the creepy aliens. I was kinda going "damn!" when it ended. And Andy, whose avoided watching the show, was watching it with me. He didn't realize it was a new episode and kept asking me questions as if I knew what was going to happen! I might finally be able to drag him into the show.

Finally managed to acquire the ep, huh?

Why's Andy avoiding it? It's awesome! For the win!

Seriously, I nearly died laughing when the Prez looked up and saw the Doctor taking notes. Priceless. *huggles show*

Yup! Good way to unwind from a long Easter weekend.

Don't know why he was avoiding it. May be because he knew I wasn't too fond of RTD Who.

Oh, and glad to see some Amy love. A lot of people don't seem to like her and I don't get it.

I completely agree about loving Amy when she loses it. Amy Pond is my wife, you get River and I can have Amy, then we can go on adorable double dates in the Tardis. :)

Are we fandom brain twins? ...Oh, right. Yes, yes we are. I also loved everything about this awesome, awesome episode (I have made the mistake of wandering into the fandom. It makes me sad and angry because OMG why can't everyone see how amazing everything is!?)

This entire scene was heart breaking and wonderful. I, tool ove how self aware River (and Moffat!) is, and I loved Rory's reaction. I'd really like to see their relationship explored more. At this point they both stand as, in different ways, outsiders to the intense Doctor/Amy friendship. I think they could bond over that, and it would be interesting.

River Song's my wife, guys. She's the shiznit. There is nothing I don't adore about her. Confident, intelligent, competent, witty, AWESOME.
YEP. It's nice to have a companion who knows at least as much (and more at times) as the Doctor about crazy alien stuff. We haven't had that in New Who really ever (kind of with Jack, but he was way more caviler about it). Don't get me wrong, I love all of the "normal people" characters, but River adds a refreshing dynamic. Also, she's a BAMF of the nth degree, and totally awesome.

This may be random, but I like Amy's reaction to the Doctor's death in the restaurant (before the younger Doctor comes out). She kinda shuts down and snaps at the others.
I totally agree. It felt so honest and real, and also serves to highlight just how emotionally attached (dependent? Maybe...) she is on the Doctor. Really, I loved that whole scene. Each character's reaction was very telling: Amy, totally shutting down, Rory and River remaining practical (again, I love the way their characters intersect for very, very different reasons).

Not a bit of it I didn't like. I like the meta of it - the structure, the plot, the pacing - and I like the it of it - the characters and the AWESOME. I want the next part. Now, please!

Wooooord. This Team Tardis is just amazing and wonderful. I hope River sticks around for a while, because as I said, I think she brings something new to the table. But even without her in every episode, I'm beyond excited for this Series. I love ALL of these characters, and I am really excited to see how the Eleven/Amy/Rory dynamic plays out. (I absolutely adore Rory, and, like River, think he brings something new to the table for New Who -- a character who likes the Doctor, but ISN'T in awe of him, but also isn't, at this point, jealous of him in the way Mickey was. He's the first New Who companion who is deeply cautious while also being observant and brave when necessary which I like because I relate to it).

And I do love Moffat's timey-whimey plots. He has yet to let me down, so I have faith this is building to something awesome.

Aauuggh!! *covers ears* Nobody shall dislike that which I love! I don't wanna hear it!

Definitely. As I recall, Rory and River haven't interacted much previously. I think they both provide a counterpoint to the oft-frenzied Doctor and Amy.

I totally agree. It felt so honest and real, and also serves to highlight just how emotionally attached (dependent? Maybe...) she is on the Doctor.

Between Doctor Who rocking my socks off and Game of Thrones being as awesome as I imagined it, weekends have become my blissed out television time. "Tingly" is a very very good word for how it makes me feel, too, and the confusion-inducing structure reminded me of Lost at its first season best, which is a happy happy place for me.

River is phenomenal in how perfectly she matches the doctor - two wigged out time travelers with stories to tell and scars to hide. She is extraordinary, period. We're seeing a different kind of companion to the Doctor in her, no matter what she is to the Doctor, and it is all fascinating. Her comments to Rory were so heartbreaking that you barely can imagine someone as awesome as River Song has so much pathos, but wait she does! And it only increases her awesomeness.

SO MUCH LOVE FOR THIS SHOW!!!!

I've never seen Classic Who, but the Moffatt seasons do this weird thing to me where it makes me nostalgic anyway, lol. Like, I enjoyed the RTD years, but when season 5 started, I thought, "YES! THIS is what the show is supposed to be like." And I've always seen the Doctor as asexual, but I am so loving Eleven/River.

Also, I like that she kept Pond instead of going with Rory's last name. No real reason. I just dig seeing that in TV shows.

Heh. "I'm not Mr. Pond. That's not how it works." "Yeah, it is." :)

Well, it's still heads and away different from Classic Who, but that's gonna happen regardless. New era. New standards of media. Different format. The classic episodes were made up of four or more 30 minute serials. That allows for different types of narratives than a forty five minute episode does (pacing is always gonna be faster in the new Who).

BUT! But! There is something, whether it's with Moffatt's writing or with Smith's Doctor, that feels more like the old-style Who for me. I adore it, whatever it is.

Heh. "I'm not Mr. Pond. That's not how it works." "Yeah, it is." :)

Yes! ♥

I loved this so much I had to let out some *squeels* while watching... but something really bothered me and no-one's mentioned it yet. So eleven dies in 200 years time, right? But doesn't that put the whole story in a weird state of being fixed? I mean, that would mean that Matt Smith is the last actor to ever play the doctor, right?! How will they get around that? Is no-one else bothered by that? Am I taking this too literally? What's Moffat doing to my brain??!! ;-)
gabrielleabelle
May. 3rd, 2011 12:15 am (UTC)
I'm kinda assuming that Moffat will get around it somehow. I seriously doubt that the Doctor definitively dies. They have to keep the franchise going. :)
