Google Never Lies

will57
As a follow-up to the Roll Call, let me take ubi4soft's example and get Googly all over this.

As she points out, googling "Buffy #34 review" brings up a LiveJournal link in the Top 10 results: moscow_watcher's review.

Googling "buffy restless interpretation" brings up an LJ link in the number one spot: my own review.

Googling "spuffy" brings up an LJ link in the Top 10: Seasonal Spuffy.

Googling "omwf" brings up an LJ link in the Top 10: OMWF Comm.

It's kinda fun. See what you can find. :)

"Buffy meta": 4 out of the top 5 results are from livejournal or links to livejournal (one of which is mine, and two stormwreath's - damn him). Though "meta" might be something of an LJ term, I guess.

Oooh!

And, hey, searching for "buffy metaphors" (which Google suggests while you're typing "meta") pulls up an LJ comm in third place.

nyah nyah nyah! ;-)

Actually, the thought that two of my posts are the first two results on Google when you search for 'Buffy meta' is kind of freaking me out here.

Also, if you Google "Buffy 8.34 review" rather than "Buffy #34 review", my LJ is the second link. Clearly you should all bow down before my fame. Gifts will be accepted. *nods majestically*

Do you use Google Analytics on your LJ? It kinda freaked me out that a lot of people find my LJ by googling gabrielleabelle (or various misspellings of it). I mean...they know my internet handle but they can't figure out how to get to my LJ? Where are they hearing about me from that's not on LJ? I don't understand that.

Gifts will be accepted. *nods majestically*

Hey! Your gift is being #2 in Google's search results. Some people pay big money for that type of ranking!

Blah, I fail at computers! I wanted to try doing the Google Analytic thing but I have no idea where to put the code it spits out.

May. 28th, 2010 01:44 am (UTC)
Oh! You don't have to do anything with the code. LJ automatically puts it in. You need to go to the Extensions tab of your Account Settings and put in the Google web property ID (It's gonna look something like: UA-12345678-1). Then ba-da-bang! Done!

I have an easy icon, if that's close enough...

When LJ first rolled it out, they FUBARed the code insertion so it wasn't working at first. I flailed for a while before I realized the problem was on their end, and then I just waited for them to fix it (Which took a while cause that's also when they rolled out the extra userpics).

Confession: I sometimes google "gabrielleabelle" when I've opened a new window on someone else's computer where the homepage is google, but haven't signed in to my journal, but I'm all go look at Gabs' journal... so maybe some of those stats are of me! Haha, I have confuzzled your analytics!

I'm resisting the urge to google your journal even more just to mess with your stats!

I must be hot when I'm confused. Why else would you do that? ;)

And now for fun, I'm looking at other search terms people used to find me.

"buffy and spike sex on balcony "
"buffy character love meta livejournal slayer "
"buffy's speech to the first slayer in restless "
"buffy/dawn "
"gabrielleabelle i love s6 "
"romeo/mercutio "
""owe him a blowjob" "
"anya "once more with feeling" lingerie "
"blowjob"
"buffy depression "
"cow pajamas buffy "

Some make me smile. Some make me giggle. Some make me go WTF?

Oh! I'm so happy! Googling "buffy depression" brings up one of my BCBW posts in the top 10 results! *happy dance*

LMFAO!

First, uhhh why "romeo/mercutio"???

Second hahahaha at "owe him a blowjob"!

Finally, awwwwww "cow pajamas buffy." ♥

May. 28th, 2010 02:27 am (UTC)
lol! If you google the phrase: "owe him a blowjob" (with quotes) my defense of Buffy post is #2. And googling "cow pajamas buffy" brings up the poll on Willow's strange Tribble PJs as #1. This is so amusing.

Romeo/Mercutio, I can't even begin to guess. Someone must have made a comment somewhere about it as a joke or something. Weird.

Oh yeah. But nobody reads anything on LJ. We should just stop writing stuff that annoys the guy in question. *nods*

"If [so and so] happens, you don't owe him a blowjob" is now like your catchphrase!

Now I want to dig out the file I used to keep of all the weird search terms that people used to find my old blog before LJ. I remember my favourite one was "does anyone hate viggo mortensen" :D

I don't, though I do sometimes look at the LJ Stats page they added fairly recently.

I understand a lot of people use Google to find websites as a matter of habit; they simply never type into the actual URL bar of their browser. I suppose it makes sense if you don't know how to spell 'gabrielleabelle'; the URL bar will just give back a 'page not found' error, but Google will suggest alternatives.

Where are they hearing about me from that's not on LJ?

All those other 'Buffy' fansites people have been talking about in your last post, presumably. ;-) Plus I don't know if your rape links are being picked up by more general feminist blogs and sites yet?

Ah. I've found Firefox's Awesomebar (which came out with FF 3) to make this practice obsolete. Just start typing anything related to the page you're looking for and, you know, it's there.

Plus I don't know if your rape links are being picked up by more general feminist blogs and sites yet?

Some are. There are some Google search terms related to that, so I guess some people could be searching for the linkspams if all they can remember is my handle. Good point.

If fandom is aware of fic, which besides reading reviews, that was my main involvement back when I lurked, these searches will lead to LJ:

"Buffy fic": In the top results is the LJ comm buffyfanfiction

"Giles fic": The 4th result is giles_fic_recs

"Spike fic": The 2nd result is spike_fics

"Xander fic": liz_marcs LJ is the third result.

"Season 8 fic": The 1st result is season8fic

And I'm sure there's more.
gabrielleabelle
May. 27th, 2010 11:06 pm (UTC)
Hmmmm..."spuffy baby fics" (which is a recommended search term by Google if you look for "spuffy fics") pulls up spuffyficrecs and seasonal_spuffy in the one-two spot. Ditto for "spuffy time travel" (another Google recommended search term).

"bangel fics" pulls up clawofcat's LJ on the first page.

And searching for "btvs femslash" brings up slashtheslayer as the 9th result.

OMG, I fell over laughing at that list of search terms for you. I'm particularly delighted by the 'sex on balcony' and also intrigued by 'Romeo/Mercutio'. Romeo/Mercutio>>>Romeo/Juliet

Best thing is, there were several variations of 'sex on balcony' that brought people to my LJ. Though I imagine people are probably looking for clips and leave as soon as they see a wall of text instead. *g*

also intrigued by 'Romeo/Mercutio'. Romeo/Mercutio>>>Romeo/Juliet

We should keep saying Romeo/Mercutio so that more people will randomly stumble upon my LJ while searching for it.

Nonsense. After the first initial disappointment, they'd clue in on the goldmine of meta they've found and stick around indefinitely *nod*

Wow, I didn't know that my review made into the Google top ten. "feelz very proud*

I google "moscow watcher" when I need to access my LJ from an internet cafe or computer club. I usually get my LJ profile, my Whedonesque profile (although I post there very rarely), BuffyForums profile and Cold Dead Seed profile.

As you should! :)

Huh. I never actually google myself. But I'm rarely on someone else's computer (Cause when I'm out and about, I have my own netbook I can log in from).
