And now I'm going to justify how somehow it's not gross and paternalistic in the same way that Angel tries to make protective decisions for Buffy later on. ***Something eloquent about how the Buffy/Angel break-up was between two equal partners in a fully-formed relationship, whereas Buffy & Owen don't have a relationship yet and so don't owe each other the same considerations. Angel also isn't responsible for dragging Buffy away from an otherwise normal life (as she is for Owen), and Owen showed some pretty reckless disregard for his own safety. Maybe if he hadn't been so eager to get killed Buffy would've given him a chance.***
I think there's a substantial difference between turning down a potential relationship and ending an already-existing one. So I don't see any hypocrisy there at all. :)
