I was going through the shooting script for Smashed (as one does), and I found myself smiling at this Spike scene that looks to have been cut. It's after Spike finds out from Warren that his chip is still working but before he calls Buffy from the payphone.
INT. SPIKE'S CRYPT - DOWNSTAIRS - NIGHT
Spike moves about the room. Organized. Preparing.
From a chest of drawers, he pulls out a stun gun, fires it a couple times to make sure it works. Sets in on a table.
From a trunk at the foot of the bed, he brings out a coil of rope, pulling it tight. Puts it on the table, too.
He rustles some more in the trunk, reveals a set of chains. And a handful of padlocks. And a pair of handcuffs. On the table.
He rummages through a stack of records, finds just what he's looking for: an LP of Roxy Music's Avalon. He pops it on a dusty old turntable.
He lights some candles, sets a bouquet of flowers in a vase, sprinkles rose petals on the bed. He looks around, taking in his handiwork, then lets out a long, contented sigh.
SPIKE
There. All ready.
He lets his eyes sweep the room once more, a final look, then
CUT TO:
EXT. GRAVEYARD - CONTINUOUS - NIGHT
Spike runs from his crypt, excited, determined focused.
EXT. ANOTHER PART OF THE GRAVEYARD - NIGHT (LATER)
Spike running much slower, winded. He eases up, starts walking.
EXT. SUNNYDALE STREET - NIGHT
Spike gets to a pay phone, exhausted but still determined.
SPIKE
Now at last, Buffy, you will come
to me, and your destiny wi -- wait.
He searches his pockets -- all of them.
SPIKE (cont'd)
Coulda sworn I brought change.
He keeps searching. Nothing. He checks the coin return slot on the phone. Empty.
SPIKE (cont'd)
Oh, balls.
And he runs back from whence he came, frustrated.
My first thought is: How adorable! I wish they'd have kept that in!
Then my second thought is: Whoa, waitaminute! I'm glad they didn't...
Cause, though I'm totally smitten with the idea of Spike sprinkling rose petals on his bed (after having just gotten out the chains and handcuffs), it would make absolutely no sense that Spike is planning a seduction of Buffy immediately after finding out his chip's working. Cause...Spike was all about unleashing pent up payback for not being able to retaliate against Buffy for the past couple years. I think for once, sex wasn't foremost in his mind when looking for Buffy at that point. He just wanted to pummel her.
Hence his complete stunned surprise when Buffy does jump his bones in the middle of the fight scene at the end. *fans self*
So, adorable scene. Glad they left it out, though.

The part where he forgets his money is cute though.
Spontaneous!Smashed!Spuffy!sex is the best. *nods*
"I knew the only thing better than killing a Slayer would be f-"
Seems plausible...
Or possibly superhuman bondage fun. They stun each other in naughty places, tie each other up, it's all nice and wholesome.
"I do beat him up a lot...For Spike that's like third base."
I'm down for the superhuman bondage fun, though.
have you discovered
All season long, thinks Spike, Buffy has resisted his sinister attraction because she thinks he's beneath her. But now he's got conclusive proof that she isn't. She came back wrong, which means they're on the same level now. She's not better than him: she belongs in the darkness with him.
All he has to do is convince her of that - by fighting her and showing her that the chip doesn't work on her. And yeah, sure, part of him will enjoy that. Vampire, right? But it's only a mean to an end. The end is getting her into bed with him, once she finally stops clinging to her illusions and accepts that they're meant to be together.
In this reading, the stungun and chains and so on are just Spike's idea of kinky sex toys. We know they used the handcuffs later on.
And the thing is, it worked, but not the way Spike hoped. Buffy didn't fall into his arms, she reacted with even more revulsion and loathing... but it was self-loathing, and she ended up having sex with him anyway for much the same reason that Angel slept with Darla in 'Reprise': an act of despair. It was all she had left.
However, I don't think that was Spike's immediate thought when confronting Buffy in Smashed. Because I just can't reconcile that with Spike's look of utter surprise when Buffy jumps his bones. The guy was not expecting it. If Spike had already followed the thought-train all the way, he would have predicted she would have done such a thing, and we'd likely see more smug self-satisfaction from him rather than WTFOMG!
Go Buffy for making the first move. \o/
I'm roughly with
However, to me the funniest bit in the cut scene is him putting Roxy Music's Avalon on the turntable. I show my age, but so does he with his outdated seduction music. Heh. Comedy gold.
I am of course now imagining the evenings Spike and Buffy spend listening to Roxy Music and Bette Midler, only to change the CD when someone arrives at the door.
(Oh god, Spike secretly likes the Icecapades, doesn't he?)
Yeah, the scene seems wrong on a number of levels. Stormwreath's point that Spike might have been excited about the chance to woo Buffy *by proving she's not better than him* sort of works...but it doesn't seem right for Spike to have thought that far ahead. He still seems really shocked when she does jump him, and I think it's true what you say: he really wants to hit her back and taunt her into taking him seriously, but not, I think, seduce her--because while they kissed, they didn't have sex and that's still a big step. And it does reduce the surprise for the audience as well--we shouldn't be expecting the sex. (Granted, sometimes information is omitted for the sake of surprise that just confuses the audience, ala the whole "Bitch is gonna see a change!" misdirect when he's getting his soul, but this isn't really one of those times.)
Also--while I do like the humour in Spike running, then running more slowly, and then realizing he's out of change, having Spike get winded after a few miles in an episode where it's essential that we see him as Buffy's approximate equal physically? No.
Ultimately, i'm very glad it was cut for a variety of reasons. My inner fangirl just liked Spike making his crypt all romantic. :)

Hmmmm...
