Talking during sex...

will11
I find myself curious as I've been reading oodles of lovely Buffy fanfic. It seems to be a constant in fics that Spike likes to talk during sex. A lot. To the point of "babbling". This doesn't seem to be a wholly Spuffy phenomenon either as I've read it in Spike/Joyce, Spike/Angel, and Spike/Riley (Hey, told you guys I was branching out).

So I'm left wondering...what is this based on? In canon.

Like, I know the idea that Spike likes performing cunnilingus in fics is based on his going down on the Buffybot in Intervention (Cause...stop and marvel that the first sexual act he does with a robot is to perform oral sex on her).

So where does this sex babbling come from? In the sex scenes we see in the show, he's pretty darn quiet. The only thing I can think of is his line in Wrecked about Buffy and him "whispering nasties" to each other.

Is that it? Is it?

And I'm not complaining at all! I enjoy this particular Spike-trait as seen in every fanfic EVER! I'm just wondering why it seems to be almost universal.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was established fanon from back before we saw any Spike sex scenes - after all, he spends most of his time outside of the bedroom unable to shut up, especially in S4/early S5. But I don't know!

True. Spike does talk a lot. I was just struck by the incongruity of him being near-silent in every sex scene we actually see on-screen.

Maybe canon got it wrong...

It's... probably not the best example.

But he did a lot of talking during the scene in Seeing Red.

Also, titles don't establish context. My eyes bugged out of my head when this showed up on my friends list, before I actually did any reading.

SR seems to be out-of-the-ordinary for...obvious reasons. He was having a breakdown and all.

Really? I've had far more risque titles before. I thought this title was rather boring, actually...

Maybe it's just common for fic writers to want Spike to be talkative and so they make it happen, possibly without meaning to. I think that quite a lot of people like the way Spike talks and so it just gets worked in.

Sort of how I like the idea of Buffy falling in love with Faith and so I just work it in. It's like writing a pairing only in this case the pairing is Spike/Words.

Spike/Words

Also known as Swords...

It was a somewhat dysfunctional relationship, however. Every time they had an argument, one of them used the silent treatment...

But didn't he talk a lot during his sex scenes with the Buffybot? I mean, it's been a while since I saw "Intervention" but from what I remember, there was a lot of flirty talk during their foreplay, as well as that tender "You know I can't bite you" exchange. I know this was only one episode and his partner was a robot but ... well ... it's all I've got to work with. :P

Jan. 19th, 2010 11:38 pm (UTC)
He did talk a lot to her. More than he ever did to the actual Buffy in S6.

Though I was thinking more the uncontrolled sex babbling that happens often in fanfic rather than the more lucid, flirty foreplay talk. They go hand-in-hand, I suppose, but they are different.

Here's my reason why:

Buffy looks at Spike for a moment, resumes kissing him. More moaning. Spike turns her around and lays her down on a conveniently placed pillow, lies on top of her. He moves down to kiss her neck. Buffy moans again. Spike lifts himself up to look at her.

SPIKE: I knew. I knew the only thing better than killing a slayer would be f-
BUFFY: What?!

Buffy shoves him away and gets up angrily, moves a few feet away. Spike remains sprawled on the floor.

Spike can't keep his mouth shut. Like ever. Not if he has something to say. So if his mouth isn't otherwise occupied with activities, I imagine him either growling or groaning or exclaiming.

I think it's just that Spike's a talker. And we expect it goes over into when he's having sex.

Hey, I've seen fics with him babbling while performing oral sex. That's quite a feat. :)

Personally, I like it. It just seems at odds with the sex scenes we do see from him. The Wrecked scene isn't during sex so much as foreplay-talk. In all the times we actually see him "in the act" he's only talking once (During the Dead Things balcony scene).

Canon or no canon to support it, I just think he would. It just seems...Spike. I mean, since we do have the nonverbal sex scenes in S.6, I guess I can imagine him being quiet during sex, but it doesn't seem like him unless he were having a "William moment." I rather think that goes hand-in-hand with BtVS airing on UPN and not Showtime. Had there been no censors to please, Spike's vulgarity would have likely shot through the room.

Well, if you count kissing as sex (which since it's TV, I think you must) then Spike is often breaking off to talk some more. He talks during the sexytimes with Harmony, the Bot, and Anya. He talks in the morning of Wrecked, on the balcony in Dead Things, in the bathroom in Seeing Red (NOT sex!). He talks at pretty much every opportunity, although there is sometimes swelling music, or no sound from the surveillance cam, or the camera cuts away pretty quickly. He's shocked in Smashed (also swelling music), we don't have sound for Doublemeat Palace. In Gone he isn't saying much for the 5 heavenly seconds that we see (but I suspect that Buffy being blinvisible might've thrown him off his game a bit), and under the carpets in Dead Things flashbacks he does appear to be concentrating on the task at hand (swelling music). Since we don't see much actual sex (although it sometimes feels as if we do), we have to go by the sex-like activities, which usually come with plenty of bandinage on his part.

Ah, maybe in the 1960s. But today we actually have sex scenes, so I think kissing can be counted as nothing more than kissing.

When does he talk during sex with Harmony and Anya? Before the act, yes. During? Not that we see.

He does seem to engage in foreplay-talk. However, I was thinking more the uncontrollable babbling during intercourse that I often see in fics. And during all the sex acts we see Spike doing, only one shows him talking (And that's Dead Things and is less "babbling" than "lecturing" and fairly atypical).

In the sex scenes we see in the show, he's pretty darn quiet.

But how about if we use that to prove he's not usually? :-) Also not the nicest most sexy or loving example, which is sort of the point: that Spike/Harmony sex scene in "Destiny"? Where Spike is clearly not very emotionally invested and probably thinking of someone else, and grits his teeth and tells her to stop talking because she'll "spoil the moment"? Clearly not his normal M.O.

Spike talks. It's what he does. Among other things.

I thought in Destiny he was trying to pretend it was Buffy so he didn't want to hear Harmony's voice cause it would ruin the fantasy. :)

Huh. You know, I've realized this before, that in fic Spike talks during sex a lot. Just the other day I was thinking that sex talk never really flowed when I was writing, so I don't have talking during sex in my fic, LOL. They talk before sex, after sex, between sex, but not during sex.

I have no idea where loquacious laying Spike comes from. I don't mind his nooky nattering in fic as long as it's not completely pointless babbling, but that goes for all dialogue, not just coital chatting.

I think someone up there pointed out that he does talk to Buffy while they're doing it on the balcony at the Bronze. Said talking doesn't seem at all out of canon character during that scene. So, I think it's a reasonable assumption that he wouldn't bother shutting up just 'cause he's having sex. :-P
gabrielleabelle
Jan. 20th, 2010 02:54 am (UTC)
Yeah, the Dead Things scene is notably atypical from their other encounters (Spike's initiating and all). And Spike's talking there is more "lecture-y" than "unrestrained babbling", which is what you tend to see in fanfic. So I'm not sure that counts as an example.

I don't mind it either. I think it's sexy as hell. I'm just curious what sparked it in fanfic. :)

On Fridays we used to wear an onion on our belt, which was the style at the time
Back in the day I remember Kalima commenting that after she wrote Mr. Talky Mouth, Spike being a babbly lover suddenly seemed to be the norm. And I remember being abashed, because I'd written a fic that referenced Spike talking muchly during sex.

I don't think it's canon and I don't recall it being a standard in fanfic until Kalima's story. Honestly, I think it was just a fanfic detail that became fanon...like Buffy smelling like vanilla and the fanged foursome being called the scourge of Europe.

Re: On Fridays we used to wear an onion on our belt, which was the style at the time
*g* Reading Mr. Talky Mouth for the first time is what prompted me to finally ask about this. I've wondered for a long time, but reading a fic that explicitly dealt with it tipped my curiosity over.

It's lovely fanon, then. :)

Erm, I don't read a whole lot of fic, so I can't say I noticed this trend. But I think maybe it's a first impressions thing? Back in S2 - in fact, I think it might be School Hard - there's a clearly sexualized foreplay scene with Dru where he's not just chatty, he's talking about non-sex stuff while he's very amorously leaning over Dru, who's reaching up for the bedpost (and presumably the cuffs). That, combined with how much Spike conflates fighting with sex, and how much he loves to chat while he hits, suggests that he's a talker in bed.

You know, not only do I not write many sex scenes, I don't actually read many sex scenes either, just skim them. (Who'd have guessed?) I suppose I really didn't notice.

I was actually struck more by the mention that Spike goes down on the Buffybot, which is a rather curious action. It either suggests that he's practicing in hopes of eventually doing the same with Buffy (though I would expect he's familiar in general, and trying to work out what Buffy likes from the Bot is probably a foolish mistake) or that he actually thinks of the Buffybot as a person in and of herself. Odd.
gabrielleabelle
Jan. 20th, 2010 03:49 pm (UTC)
I actually think the simplest explanation is that Spike just likes going down on women for his own sexual gratification.

Which is not an unattractive quality, by any stretch of the imagination. ;)

I tend to agree with others that talking is very much Spike's default mode. Certainly it's an important element of foreplay for him - just as much as violence is. So the carrying over into actual sex (and when does one stop and the other begin, anyway? In fanon he gives her a heck of a lot of non-penetrative orgasms. Not that I object.) And the SR scene shows him desperately talking as if that alone will turn her on - which it couldn't.

Perhaps it reflects habits of many writers too? *g*

Or the desires. Buffy's usually much more silent. And if Buffy's an avatar for the writer during sex scenes, then Spike would be the "ideal partner".

So apparently, all ladies want a chatty guy in bed. Nice. :)

Hi!

There's a few different places you can look.

seasonal_spuffy is an LJ community that runs a couple times a year. You'll find a lot of Spuffy fics posted there.

Also, moscow_watcher does seasonal recs of mainly Spuffy fics. They're listed here and go back a couple years. Another great place to start.

Also also, buffyversetop5 is an LJ community that has an annual event where people post their Top 5 recs for various Buffyverse fanstuff. Here's the tag for Buffy/Spike.

That should get you started on LJ, I hope. :)
