Sunday linkage

will17
Ah, my Austin trip looks to be back on. I thought this might happen. Yay!

I have nothing interesting to add. Have some links. Well, standard disclaimer first.

1. Trigger warning! Links are related to rape and feminism. Click with care.

2. I don't always agree with everything. I just link to it.

3. If you have time. Read the comments. 'Tis nifty.

Feministing's Intended Consequences - A pointer to Jonathan Torgovnik's photographs of children of rape survivors in the Congo.

On false reports

Alas' Skepticism and Criticism of Eugene Kanin’s Study Of False Rape Reports

Rape culture

Thinking Girl's surprise! rapist’s lawyer is a misogynistic asshole - article is from a local newspaper and doesn't appear to have any online version. Is referenced, though.

"These comments obviously minimize and dismiss the effects of rape on the psychological health and wellbeing of survivors of rape. Why is this so dangerous? It encourages rape, in so many words, by affirming that victims can easily get over their rape experiences."

Thinking Girl's re-opening the rape debate

"What the victim/survivor did or didn’t do isn’t the issue – it is what the rapist did that matters. And although practical advice, and self-defense, can certainly help some people to avoid becoming a rape victim/survivor, I think what is needed is a more comprehensive social plan to stop people from becoming rapists."

Feministing's Amazon sells another video game where you "play" sexual abuser

"This includes using poison gas on the victim, sexually assaulting her and using psychological abuse against her in efforts to make her "love" you. Unbelievable."

Rape and the failure of the legal system

The Curvature's Judge: I’d call it rape, but I don’t like your job

"Of course you would think — hope — that if any other woman agreed to have sex with a man and then was gang raped at gunpoint by his friends, it would undoubtedly be considered a rape. Deni’s issue, of course, is that the victim is a prostitute. And everyone knows that such a “loose” woman (or a non-virgin, a wife, a black woman . . .) can’t be raped."

The Curvature's This is what we mean when we talk about a rape culture - Relevant Source

"In fact, experts who realize that continuing a relationship with a rapist is incredibly common behavior for a rape survivor are barred by Pennsylvania law from testifying about the reactions of rape victims. The jury had to figure it out for themselves."

abyss2hope's Slow Response, Harassment And Dropped Charges - Relevant Source

"Putting the responsibility for lack of sufficient evidence, especially forensic evidence, onto rape victims keeps law enforcement from seeing where they are failing rape victims and where they are helping rapists."

PC Bloggs' Look how EQUAL we are

"Below are two examples of the kind of regular updates entered into Blandshire's Incident Control System by the on-duty control room supervisor following different reports."

PC Bloggs' An Idiot's Guide for Rape Victims

"Specifically use the word 'Stop'. Today's case law has proven that 'No' is not good enough, nor is crying, struggling or lying stiff and terrified in the hope it will go away. It really is your own fault if the bloke doesn't realise you're not having fun."

Hmmm, and just when I thought I couldn't be surprised by anything I heard about rape, whabam come the rape culture and rape and the failure of the legal system links. I pretty much have no words for it except, "Wha? Buh? Huh?"

And also, "How soon can we get that man-cage built?"

Also, from seeing your other post, this guy said the trip was off, then on, then off? Grrrrrr...

Yeah, that's the typical reaction.

Eh, it's actually not that bad. He texted this morning that his date with his new crush hadn't gone as well as he'd hoped so he still thought I could come down. Then later he said he felt kinda guilty because he really liked this girl and thought it might go somewhere. So I canceled it because I didn't want him to be uncomfortable and preoccupied while I was there.

He's fickle. I've come to expect it. *shrugs*

Mmm, gotcha. Still reserve the right to be pissed at him, though! :D
